The environment and New Media

One of the biggest issues our society faces is global warming. The contamination of the environment, deforestation, and other human-related events have lead to a rise in CO2 levels. As a result, the planets temperature has been on the rise for many years and it's reaching a point of no return. Many animals are going extinct, due to their habitats being destroyed ,and areas of the world are suffering from unusual weather patterns. Still, new media has being a major support for the environmentalist to communicate and promote change. New media has helped activist to combat the propaganda and immense resources of the old energy economy. Activist are able to inform the population of the damages and effects on the environment human actions have caused and how to lower or stop climate change. Even more importantly, new media has allowed for people to come together faster than ever before to fight against things that would harm the environment. This can be seen nowadays with the issues of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The proposed pipeline would run from the Bakken oil fields in western North Dakota to southern Illinois, crossing the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, as well as part of Lake Oahe near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. However, the pipeline will have a damaging effect on the environment. It will displace and destroyed the home of the animals that live in the area but even more importantly the pipeline can lead to geological disaster. if this pipe were to break it will ruin the area's ecosystem and displace the people living there, it will have a major effect on the water supply in the entire area. As a result, many activists have use social media to inform the public of the effects this pipeline will have. New Media has allowed them to plan effective protests that have slow the construction of this pipeline. New Media has brought people together in order to protect the environment. Even all of the tribes in the United States are working together along with artist to stop the creations of this pipeline.
