Health & Fitness

New Media, Fitness, and Health are intertwined. We look to new media, especially the internet, to find information about diets, fads, supplements, healthy foods, and work outs to try. We also turn to online communities for motivational support and advice on ways to integrate health and fitness into our daily lives. Websites such as Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube are prime locations to find such information because of their user friendly nature and interactive culture. The variety of fitness videos are numerous, including videos covering topics such as powerlifting, cross fitness, swimming, biking, dancing, softball, tennis, rugby, martial arts, etc. You can also discover Zumba videos, fitness experts, and everyday exercise videos. Many social networks, such as Instagram and Pinterest, are also used to market weight loss products. It is common to see people on these sites sponsoring a new product(s) that helps them lose weight. Some popular examples are new "slimming" wraps and fit tea diets. Celebrities contribute to this culture because their images and names are often used to promote fitness trends. Using social media sites to promote health and fitness is a powerful way to motivate people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Apps

FITNESS

There are plenty of them! Some of these apps vary based on what they are targeting. If you access the app store on your phone or electronic device, you can automatically search for apps in the Health and Fitness category. Exercise apps are designed for a number of things including weight lifting, running, weight loss, food logging, and more. Some companies promoting these apps include Weight Watchers, MyFitnessPal, Under Armour App, Fit Bit, and Nike+Running etc. Most smart phones are equipped with trackers to track exercise, heart rate and sleep.

HEALTHY EATING

"Apple Health App"- The application is intended to be a personal and central data collection point, for connected third-party electronic accessories and wearable technology, that can directly monitor and analyse an individual's biochemistry and physiology for medical and general fitness purposes. A person can easily watch over their own health or someones health, with this app such as heart rate how much exercise you have done and how many steps you took that day.

Fooducate - Makes you aware of the quality of calories you are intaking. Calorie counts matter, but 300 calories of cake isn’t the same as 300 calories of kale. Macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) are important, too. Fooducate’s food logger will keep track of your nutrient intake as well as your daily calorie count, and even give you healthier alternatives for the junkier foods you input.

Harvest - Lets you know what fruits and vegetables are in season. There’s no bigger turn-off to healthy eating than bland and underripe produce and fruit (ever tasted a blueberry in October?). Harvest lets you know exactly what items will be at their flavorful peak at the grocery store, and teaches you how to select the ripest of the bunch.

'Rawvana- Over 100 raw recipes. Raw diets SOUND like a good idea. Unprocessed and uncooked, raw foods have the potential to improve digestion, decrease inflammation, clear your skin, achieve world peace, etc, etc. But the image of a limp kale and broccoli salad for lunch can test even the most disciplined of eaters. Enter Rawvana, whose delicious Thai rice, vegan hamburger, and coconut cream cookie recipes will entice the pickiest of eaters into a more simplified and healthier diet.

Fitness Bloggers

Since Youtube is a very popular site for new media, many people have used this as an opportunity to create videos to teach people about health and fitness. Users can create their own Youtube channel and post videos about their workouts, their diet, and their overall health awareness. These people are called fitness bloggers. They are able to gain many subscribers and popularity from those who are interested in staying in shape and eating healthy.

CASSEY HO

Cassey Ho of Blogilates is a pleasantly encouraging YouTuber to get you in shape. Her free-spirited personality keeps you questioning how she manages to smile throughout the killer thigh workout, while you wince out of muscle soreness. She even has a calendar to keep you organized with your plans and goals.

BRETT CAP

For example, brettcap is a famous fitness blogger who posts videos on Youtube helping both men and women live a healthier lifestyle. He posts videos of healthy recipes including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and deserts. He also posts videos of his workouts and explains exactly how to work each muscle in the body. His entire Youtube channel is meant to inspire people to be more healthy and fit and encourage them to take care of their bodies.

People also use other sites such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to post about their healthy lifestyle. For example, there are many Instagram accounts made specifically for people to post fitness pictures and videos. Many people follow these accounts and learn about ways to stay healthy.
