Multiplayer Online Battle Arena

Multiplayer online battle arena(MOBA) is a subgenre of real time strategy, in which a player controls a single character in one of two teams. Typically the objective is to destroy enemy structures with the help of computer controlled units that spawn periodically and march striaght to push toward the objective. Players' characters have abilities and advantages that improve over the course of a match which contribute to a team's strategy. MOBA's are a mix of action, role-playing, and real time strategy games.

Games

Smite

Smite is a third-person multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Hi-Rez Studios for Microsoft Windows, macOS PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In Smite, players control a god, goddess, or other mythological figure and take part in team based combat, using abilities and tactics against other player-controlled gods and non-player-controlled minions. The game has multiple PvP modes, many playable characters, and has a successful esports scene with multiple tournaments, including the annual Smite World Championship which has a large US$1 million dollar prize pool.

Game Modes

  • Conquest: Conquest is the main mode of the game, a 5v5 three-lane MOBA map. The map has a Greek visual theme ("The Siege of Olympus"). As with the traditional MOBA gameplay, Conquest is played with two teams of five players, with the main objective being to kill the enemy team's Titan. Conquest is considered to be the most competitive of the modes, and is advised only for those with knowledge of the game.
  • Arena: Arena is a 5v5 game mode played with minions and side-objectives including buff camps, on a map with a Roman visual theme ("The Grand Colosseum"). However, rather than having lanes, the map is a wide open area. Minions spawn and try to enter the enemy's portal located in front of the enemy base. In Arena each team begins with 500 tickets, with the goal being to reduce the enemy team's ticket counter to 0 by killing their players and minions, or escorting friendly minions, including the special super minion called Arena Juggernaut that spawns every 10 player kills, to the enemy portal.
  • Joust: Joust is a game mode featuring a one lane, one tower map with a Phoenix on each side, and played with two teams of three players. Joust is similar to the Conquest game mode, complete with the Titan in each team's base, a basic jungle and a special jungle boss called the Bull Demon King. Whichever team defeats this creature is granted a small buff, and the enemy team's nearest structure is disabled. The game mode features a Chinese visual theme ("Sun Wukong and the Sky Palace").
  • Assault: Assault is a game mode that is based on the ARAM (All Random All Mid) custom match mode from other MOBA titles. Each player is assigned a random god (however, the player may choose to swap gods with another player or "re-roll" their god for a small price of in-game currency or premium currency), and they are all taking charge in a single lane. In this game mode, the ability to recall is disabled, so the only way to buy items from the shop is to die. The objective is similar to that of Conquest: Destroy the enemy team's two towers, Phoenix, and finally their Titan. This game mode excludes a jungle. This game mode features a Norse visual theme ("Ragnarök").
  • Siege: Siege is a game mode played on a map with two lanes, each consisting of two towers and a Phoenix, and the Titan on each team's base, plus a jungle in between the lanes. Unlike Conquest, there is less emphasis on gathering gold/experience to become stronger and more on taking down enemy objectives as soon as possible. To do this, there is a special super minion called Siege Juggernaut, which is more resistant, twice as fast as regular minions, deals bonus damage to structures and allows allied players to quickly teleport to its position. To spawn one, a team needs to fill a counter of 100 points by either killing enemy minions (+1 point each), killing enemy players (+5 each) or clearing neutral camps (+9 each). Once spawned, the Siege Juggernaut will move forward, attacking any enemy units in its path while prioritizing structures. In this mode, there is also a special jungle boss, the Wild Juggernaut. Defeating this monster will instantly spawn a friendly Siege Juggernaut, separate from the counter, allowing for two to appear at once. Siege was originally played with two teams of five, until it was changed after the player base showed a 4v4 gameplay to be more valuable. This game mode features a Mayan visual theme ("The End of the Great Cycle").
  • Clash: Clash is a 5v5 game mode that features a map with two lanes, with each lane having one tower and a Phoenix. The main goal is to destroy enemy objectives, most importantly, the enemy Titan. This game mode is meant to be a a mix of Conquest and Arena game modes, where it's not too much like one or the other, and features a unique jungle boss called Apophis that spawns over the center jungle camp during the match and provides a powerful buff for the team who delivered the killing blow on it. This game mode features an Egyptian visual theme.

Classes

In Smite, each playable character belong to one of the five classes.

Hunter: They all have ranged attacks and deal physical damage to enemies. They tend to rely on range and attack speed and usually play at a very steady progressive pace. In Conquest they typically share bottom lane with a Guardian or support character.

Assassin: They are usually very light or easy to kill. However they specialize in dealing a lot of damage to targets and typically are fast as well. In Conquest mode, they tend to roam the jungle eliminating camps for teammates. They deal physical damage to enemies.

Warrior: They are very well balanced and probably the most versatile class out of all. They can deal damage but at the same time take punishment as well. Warriors typically are in the top lane in Conquest mode. They deal physical damage to enemies.

Guardian: They are usually the support characters, meaning they usually take damage for teammates since they have the ability to take punishment. They tend to have abilities which may not be effective to get a kill themselves but usually to help teammates do so. They deal magical damage.

Mage: They are a bit similar to assassins when it comes to health and damage output. They can deal a lot of magical damage and do not always necessarily have the best defense. They do however usually possess very powerful and/or effective abilities to get kills or to get in and out of certain situations.
